AARO Unresolved Case Analysis Update: Western United States Event

AARO's 5 June 2026 case update on the October 2023 Western U.S. Event, where six federal special agents reported orange "mother orbs" releasing smaller red orbs near a sensitive national security site. AARO weighs seven hypotheses: it ties about 60 percent of the activity to aircraft dispensing flares, rules out exhaust, rates foreign activity highly unlikely, and says unrecognized technology may account for up to 40 percent, a provisional view drawn from testimony and elimination. Read it before the five narratives, DOW-UAP-D079 to D083.

Narrative Statement 2, Western United States Event, 2023

Witness 2's statement to AARO, the fullest of the five, covers three October 2023 incidents: a bright orb expelling red lights about five times in half an hour; lights that seemed to mimic vehicle headlights and a box truck while gliding over rough terrain; and a single light the agents could not catch at about 80 miles per hour. The agent calls the objects "highly reactive" to their approach. The agent also refers to video footage and audio, while AARO's update (DOW-UAP-D077) says no video was collected.

FD-1057-06, Northeastern United States, 2024

In November 2024 two FBI special agents went to a northeastern U.S. home to confirm the owner's reports and video of UAP over the previous three years. About 20 minutes in, one agent saw a pulsing white light move erratically at or below the tree line. At about 5:30 pm both agents saw a white light above a red light at treetop height cross right to left, vanish, reappear where it began and repeat. This is where witness reports become agent observation; FBI-UAP-D004 to D008 and videos PR001 to PR003 cover the same area.

FD-302, Unresolved UAP Report, Colorado Springs, 2022

FBI interview of a soldier who, with four others from his unit at Fort Carson, watched a motionless, matte off-white "bean-shaped" object over a saddle of Cheyenne Mountain in February 2022, covered in an abstract polygon pattern. It was gone when they looked back after deciding to fetch a phone. Their separate drawings matched. Read with FBI-UAP-D002 (potato shape, shifting panels) and ICA-UAP-D001 (a low-confidence sunlight-backscatter assessment); the three records give different times of day.

CIA-UAP-017, Placement on High Alert Due to Perceived Aggressive Foreign Posturing

A SECRET/NOFORN CIA information report distributed 3 July 2008 to the White House Situation Room, DNI, FBI, FAA and many commands. It relays reporting of an object hovering over Harare International Airport on the afternoon of 2 July 2008, possibly seen by radar and optically, with "beams" emanating from it. Observers described a disc with a hollow center and rotating lights underneath that shifted color before it climbed out of sight. Those aware debated foreign reconnaissance versus extraterrestrial origin; the incident led to a high-alert decision.

Scientific Advisory Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects, Report, 1952-1953

    Official summary, as published

This file contains correspondence and reports dated 1952–1953 from the Scientific Advisory Panel on Unidentified Flying Objects, convened by the CIA’s Office of Scientific Intelligence. The panel’s primary conclusion was that “flying saucers” did not pose a direct physical threat to the national security of the United States. The panel found no evidence that these phenomena were attributable to hostile foreign artifacts or indicated a need to revise existing scientific concepts.

However, the panel identified a significant indirect threat stemming from the public’s fascination with the subject. The panel concluded that the high volume of reports, encouraged by a "sensationalist press," could overwhelm and clog vital intelligence and communication channels, potentially distracting from genuine threats. Furthermore, they warned that a “morbid national psychology” could be exploited by adversaries to incite “hysterical behavior and harmful distrust of duly constituted authority.” To mitigate these risks, the panel recommended an official policy of “debunking” to “strip the UFO subject of its mystery,” alongside a training initiative for military personnel to better recognize and filter out misidentified objects, thereby reducing communication “noise” and allowing the national security apparatus to focus on more "legitimate defense concerns."

“Triangle Orbs,” Northeastern United States, 2021

    Official summary, as published

In November 2021, at approximately 0500 local time in the northeastern United States, an eyewitness observed a bright light source near the horizon at an estimated distance of 2,000 feet. The light source initially appeared as a single intense luminous object before resolving into multiple lights exhibiting erratic rotational motion relative to one another. The object slowly moved laterally from left to right during the encounter. The eyewitness captured the video with a hand-held iPhone 12 Pro, resulting in unintended camera movement. The location was well known to the eyewitness and is sparsely populated.

The description above is derived from statements provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by the eyewitness to the event. The FBI assesses the individual who reported this event as highly credible. The subject matter described in files FBI-UAP-D004 through FBI-UAP-D008 and depicted in the video footage FBI-UAP-PR001 through FBI-UAP-PR003 corresponds to reports originating from the same general area in the northeastern United States.

In March 2022, at approximately 1920 local time in the northeastern United States, an eyewitness observed two bright red luminous light sources hovering near the horizon at an estimated distance of 2,500 feet. Both luminous objects maintained generally stationary positions throughout the encounter. The lower light source appeared to rotate slowly relative to the upper light source, moving from an apparent 6 o’clock position to slightly beyond the apparent 9 o’clock position. The eyewitness did not hear any sounds from the light sources. The eyewitness captured this video using an iPhone 12 Pro at a location well known to them, which is sparsely populated.

    “Orbs Over the Pond,” 2024

    Official summary, as published

In October 2024, at approximately 1851 local time in the northeastern United States, an eyewitness observed a light source below the horizon, hovering above a pond at an estimated distance of 2,700 feet. The luminous object resembled a “plasma-like sphere” intermittently changing shape and luminosity. At times, the primary light source appeared to separate into smaller luminous points. A luminous point below the primary source hovered just above the water and did not appear consistent with a surface reflection. The object remained generally stationary for approximately 45 minutes before disappearing. The eyewitness did not hear any sound from the objects. This video was captured by a private citizen on an iPhone and subsequently analyzed and authenticated by the U.S. Government. To protect the individual’s privacy, the footage has been cropped. Apart from this privacy-protective measure, no edits, enhancements, or alterations have been made to the visual content.

    “Northeastern Orb Sighting,” 2025

    Official summary, as published

In July 2025, at approximately 2100 local time in the northeastern United States, an eyewitness observed an intense bright light in their backyard as they parked their car upon returning home from work. The light was hovering approximately 25 feet off the ground, below a tree line near the center of their backyard, at an estimated distance of 90 feet. The eyewitness exited their vehicle briefly before retrieving their phone to record the event. The spouse of the eyewitness came outside to assess the situation. The spouse also witnessed the light, describing it as a “brilliant red sphere” about one meter in diameter. The center of the red sphere appeared to be a white plasma “sun” about the size of a basketball. The orb slowly rose and moved to the left, and both eyewitnesses observed a second, identical orb, hovering above the other orb.

The eyewitness then began recording the event using an iPhone 14 Pro Max, capturing the footage depicted in this video. As the eyewitness began recording, the orbs moved westward together above a nearby tree line. The witnesses described the orbs’ motion as silent and smooth, and as moving in tandem as though they were flying in formation or tethered together. As the orbs moved out of sight, both eyewitnesses saw them appear to merge. The eyewitnesses estimated that the orbs moved from their initial position before disappearing from view at an estimated distance of 75 yards. This observation occurred within 25 miles of the “Triangle Orbs,” “Red Orb Rotation,” and “Orbs Over the Pond,” sightings at a location well known to them, which is sparsely populated.

The description above is derived from statements provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) by eyewitnesses to the event. The FBI assesses the individuals who reported this event as credible. The subject matter described in files FBI-UAP-D009 through FBI-UAP-D010 and depicted in the video footage FBI-UAP-PR004 corresponds to reports originating from the same general area in the northeastern United States.

Analysis: Colorado Springs UAP Incident, 2022

    Official summary, as published

This document contains analysis by an All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) Intelligence Community (IC) partner to account for a 2022 incident involving an airborne object near Colorado Springs, Colorado. U.S. military service members reported the incident to AARO in 2023. AARO’s IC partner assessed, with low confidence, that the reported phenomenon, which observers characterized as resembling an “angular, non-symmetrical potato,” was attributable to sunlight backscattering, where sunlight reflecting from mountain snow cover illuminated the underside of low-altitude clouds. This low-confidence assessment contributes to AARO’s consideration of the incident, which remains unresolved as of June 2026.
