Our reading
READ FIRSTAir Materiel Command's 1947 flying-disc file. It holds the Twining memo of 23 September 1947 to Schulgen ("something real and not visionary or fictitious") and Maj. Gen. Craigie's letter of 30 December 1947 directing AMC to set up a project with the code name "SIGN". Around them: McCoy's letter sending a Loedding flying-disc drawing with Horten flying-wing reports, a Fourth Air Force photo case closed as film defects, and a Santa Fe woman's theory of Soviet discs launched from Mexico. The founding paperwork of the Air Force's UFO study, in one file.
Three separate measures, each with its reason. They are never added into a score.
E Evidence 1 of 3
Mostly staff correspondence; the Twining opinion summarizes reported characteristics secondhand, plus one photo case.
N Novelty 1 of 3
The Twining memo has been public for decades; the surrounding AMC file is now official text.
L Linkage 3 of 3
Produced by Air Materiel Command at Wright Field; holds the Twining memo and the letter naming Project SIGN.
Flags
- The file explains itself. Words in the file that bear on what it shows (recorded, not a verdict):
- There is a possibility that some of the incidents may be caused by natural phenomena, such as meteors. (page 12)
- The marks appearing on the photographs inclosed in basic letter are believed to be defects in the film, paper, or camera and not pictures of "flying discs". (page 4)
- Previously public.
